Its worth checking the Good Net-Keeping Site for assessments of

Very few are fully Usenet compliant although Turnpike from Thus/Demon
passes on most points. Its killfile rules are quite potent, if complex;
you can set them to perform all manner of neat tricks including, for
example, the exclusion of dross from particular soup kitchen servers
such as Tera News or Allbyte. The rules can be set to exclude posts that
are cross-posted to any newsgroup.
But decent newsclients are not free. On the other hand, they are
probably the cheapest yet most-used software packages youre likely to
use. MS seem particularly reluctant to address many of OEs failings, in
particular the vulnerability of its address book.
