I use Agent for news, although I dont think it has cross-post
blocking. For spam I use Spampal - its invaluable.

By the looks of it, Nfilter aka NewsProxy should do the job for the
crossposts. Read about it here (youve prolly seen this site already, quite
interesting actually)
http://www.hyphenologist.co.uk/killfile/killfilefaqhtm.htm#Nfilter
and here:
http://www.aapcsite.plus.com/newsproxy.html

It looks like you could write a rule to block crossposts including a
particular group (thus not deleting UMD UMHC crossposts which possibly might
wanted!)

Sounds really good, but the thing is www.nfilter.org doesnt work for me and
i havent managed to find much more out about it (or even the installation -
big problem!)

Anyone know where it can be found??

Cheers

Paul

My mail server has a built-in copy of SpamAssassin and it works a treat. Not
sure if they do a standalone version or not.

Managed to find a copy here:
http://dl2.163.com/soft/newbj/server/NewsProxy.exe
and the dat file here:
http://www.hotel.wineasy.se/xemu/nfilter.dat

Just trying it out now. Looks quite good.

Version 4 of Spam Inspector is excellent. Its $20, but well worth it.

http://www.giantcompany.com Take the free 15 day trial... import names from
your address book as friends, and itll never erase any of their messages
inadvertantly.

Its worth checking the Good Net-Keeping Site for assessments of
newsclients at:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~js/gnksa/

Very few are fully Usenet compliant although Turnpike from Thus/Demon
passes on most points. Its killfile rules are quite potent, if complex;
you can set them to perform all manner of neat tricks including, for
example, the exclusion of dross from particular soup kitchen servers
such as Tera News or Allbyte. The rules can be set to exclude posts that
are cross-posted to any newsgroup.

But decent newsclients are not free. On the other hand, they are
probably the cheapest yet most-used software packages youre likely to
use. MS seem particularly reluctant to address many of OEs failings, in
particular the vulnerability of its address book.
