After having seen SD DVDs displayed on numerous HiDef displays looking well
crap!!! and seeing SD DVDs scaled using a propper doggiies danglers
scaler (Lumagen) in HiDef got me wondering if there were any offline line
software scaling solutions. ie put you DVD into your PC, it rips it to hard
disk, then spends however long (days ??) scaling it to 720p/1080i/1080p etc
(maybe saving it as a HiDef DiVx etc) for display on your video card that
has HDMI output ?

no point.
you COULD take the 720x576 resolution dvds, and process them so that they
become a hi def resolution of your choice.
there wouldnt be any point though - they wouldnt magically gain extra detail
that wasnt there to begin with.
also, if you play said dvds back from your pc using normal pc playback
software, they will be scaled to the output resolution of your pc anyway.
pulldown removal etc would mainly be down to your graphics card drivers.

Hmmm, personal preference possibly. You could take SD input and generate HD
via an algorithm such as MDDF (Multi-Direction Diagonal Filter) that could
be perceived as better quality than SD on a HD device...

youd still be duplicating what your pc does anyway - not to mention the tv
itself.
and it still wouldnt contain any extra picture information.

Yes I know, but from personal experience a SD 720x576 DVD (via SCART)
looks a hell of a lot better scaled using a Lumagen scaler than the
scalers built into the current crop of HiDef displays.

Your numerous HiDef sets must be crap and/or have a crap internal scaler.
Ive got an Hitachi PJTX200 projector (with a 2m diagonal screen) and video
quality of SD DVDs is never less than excellent, whether through its HDMI or
analog connections.

YMMV. Some people like processed images ;-)
