I am wanting to buy an AV receiver and would like to be able to connect
my Sky plus box, dvd player and xbox 360 all up to it with video and
audio 5.1

My current tv is a 32 CRT with the best input being an RGB scart.

All bits have optical 5.1 out so this would be the preferred option for
connecting the audio up but where i am confused is the video.

I would like to use the rgb scart output of each device but dont see
anyway of connecting these into the av receivers as they dont support
scart, how do i do it without loosing quality

Cheers guys

Chris

Probably with a SCART to RGB phono cable.
See menu at http://www.cutpricecables.co.uk/

SCART is a type of connector. SCART can carry Composite, S-Video and RGB
component signals - RGB giving the best quality. However, most AV Amps
never allow SCART switching therefore you have to use either S-Video or
Composite and as you have realised this will affect the quality.

Theres no easy way to get full quality AV switching - I have achieved it
using Component (YCrCb) connectivity. The Amp has switching for component
and the DVD & Playstation have native component and Ive used an
RGB-to-component converter for Sky+.

Things are heading digital with HDMI and this is definitely the way
forward... Especially with Sky (HD), DVD Players and the XBox utilising
this connectivity. However, currently this is the domain of
LCDs/Plasmas...

Regards,
Justin.

There is a way to route RGB through your AV amp, but Im not sure that
the Ł5 SCART to RGB cable is the right solution. For this type of
cable to work there needs to be a timing signal present on the Green
connectors from the DVD etc; it then needs to be a high enough voltage
to survive the in/out connections from source to amp to TV, and finally
the TV needs to be able to pick up the Sync on Green. Thats a lot of
ifs!

Providing all these things are present, then an AV amp with component
switching will handle the RGB signals. If the amp is any good then the
RGB signal will look OK, but not quite as good as a direct connection
using SCART.

In the real world most of live with others in the house who dont
understand AV. They want to switch on the TV and watch Sky with sound
coming out of the TV speakers. Dead simple, no fuss. SCART does exactly
that.

Hook up your DVD through Sky+ to the TV using SCART cables and wire the
optical audio separately to the AV amp. Use a second TV input for the
games console. Wire the optical audio separately to the AV amp in the
same way. Take a basic phono lead out of the monitor out on the AV amp
to the TV so you can see the amps On Screen Displays for set-up.

OK, youve got to switch the TV and amp separately when you want big
sound, but believe me its better quality this way and youll avoid
lots of arguments :-)

Ive not seen any AV receiver that supports RGB switching but would be
glad to hear of one. Most have two busses - one composite and one S-Video.
I suppose its because theres no small industry standard RGB connector -
SCARTS would simply be too big.

I had this set-up with my CRT set and it worked well. Only my STB box was
at the TV and fed RGB - everything else was at the other side of the room
and run S-Video, with the Hi-Fi speakers always in use regardless of
source.

Then I got a non CRT which delays the picture through processing - they
all do. It includes an internal sound delay to sort things out, but this
of course isnt in circuit if feeding pictures only to it from the AV set
up. Some better more modern AV amps allow you to compensate for this, I
believe.

Onkyo did one with SCARTs a few years back.

If you can get the signal to phonos then any AV amp with component
sockets (3 x phonos) can be used for the RGB portion of the signal. The
Sync signal is handled by the composite sockets. So your wiring is:
Video 1 In - component for RGB + composite for Sync,
Video 2 In - component for RGB + composite for Sync,
..and so on...

Video Out - component for RGB + composite for Sync.

Budget amps like the Denon AVR1705, Pioneer VSX-915 and Cambridge Azur
all have component sockets as well as the usual composite and S-video,
and theyre all available for under Ł400
