So the LCD revolution starts here (before anyone says owt I ordered mine
before Nige ordered his Sharp!!).

Just finished setting up my gorgeous new 27 Thomson LCD TV. Got mine
for Ł1299 but Currys and Comet seem to have them for Ł1499 - Im sure
bartering will help ;)

The Good points:

picture is wonderful, natural and flicker free
progressive scan inputs on component phonos - dvd never looked better
DVi input for future DVD upgrade
vga input for pc
Screen size almost exactly the same as the 28 widescreen its replacing
Lightweight (16kg) and no fan required for cooling

The Bad:

only one scart :( Ive managed to get round this by dasiy chaining tho)
remote is horrible (unusual for a Thomoson product thanks heavens for my
mx500)
native 1024 x 768 resolution and internal upscaling shows just how bad
Sky Digital is (Freeview is a little better)

This is a belter of a set at a great price. The TV looks beautiful even
when switched off. I can see a lot of these being shifted over the next
few months, plenty more 27 and 28 models on the horizon too.

LMK when a 42 widescreen LCD screen is Ł1100. Then Ill be interested ;-)
And as long as crystal discharge time is very fast, with no sign of trails,
and good black level & good colour reproduction (natural skin tones etc)

I know many of us buy on-line but to be fair Currys sometimes have some
good deals if you get the right promotion. Ive had a couple of deals off
them recently that couldnt be beat online. However earlier in the year
when I was after a tele, Currys were 200 quid dearer than Comet 200 yards
away on the same tv.

Just out of interest, Comet promise to price match with High St shops and
also throw in 10% of the difference so in theory that means Ł1279. Ive
also found the staff willing to bend the rules slightly for a sale.
However, my experience with Currys assistants is that they dont seem to be
that flexible and seem to require the manager far quicker than Comet staff
who seem to be able to make some decisions. Back in the spring, Currys
offered to price match with a local store on my HT system...they agreed in
principle but when I showed them that it was Ł150 quid cheaper they flatly
refused to do simply on the grounds that it was too much!

No. Out of my price range anyway at the present time. I think I would be
prepared to spend Ł1500 on a good quality major brand 42 LCD (or Plasma)
widescreen panel. Probably spend a while doing a comparison with my CRT RP
though. And will be a few years until (Panasonic/Toshiba) Plasma or LCD
panels reach Ł1500 though?
